Six inspiring, international speakers on the theme of digital design and construction.

13:30 - 14:00

Hans Laagland

Demoulded
Built 3D printed concrete structures

A structural engineer should strive for novelty, should challenge themselves, building on previously acquired knowledge with each step. The market is slow to adopt 3D printed concrete, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to explore this unknown territory, suddenly finding ourselves working with robots. What can we achieve, and does it actually solve a problem?

14:00 - 14:30

Jelle Feringa.

Automation
New business models in architecture and robotics

The use of robotics in construction, in other words automation, can tap into and seems to correlate with the autonomy of the architect. This raises the question if the idea of the architect as master builder is mere nostalgia or, because of automation, has become a once again relevant frame of reference.

14:45 - 15:15

Edyta Augustynowicz

Cross-border
Collaborative design in the digital era

If modernism in architecture imposed uniformity, the new digital era opens the gate for plurality and may revolutionize not only how we work, but also how we function as a society. Interdisciplinary design supported by computation offers new means to question the state of the art in terms of form, communication, disciplining and knowledge.

15:15 - 15:45

Stephanie Chaltiel

Dronecrete
Recent case studies in drone spraying on light formwork

A pluridisciplinary team of architects, engineers and drone experts has developed a technique where drones spray mortar onto light formworks, resulting in robust, insulated shell structures and architectural envelopes. It turns a new page in construction for emergency, remote or dense urban areas, making building with clay and drones for large scale buildings a possibility.

16:00 - 16:30

David Lopez Lopez

Revault
Innovation in the construction, design and analysis of tile vaults.

The traditional construction technique of tile vaulting has shown in the last few years its potential to create expressive structures with a formal language well beyond what is typically associated with masonry architecture. The latest research on its construction, materials, design and analysis, predicts much more to come.

16:30 - 17:00

Maurizio Barberio

Digitalstone
Digital fabrication of stone design

New paths can be explored in stone architecture and design, thanks to the use of new digital design and fabrication processes. Two case studies, ‘Flux Vault’ and ‘Additive Stereotomy’ serve as examples of this ongoing digital revolution, outlining the risks but also the potentialities of such a revolution in relation to stone industry.
