Tourist information and travel tips about Heerlen can you find at the VVV Heerlen.
Heerlen is a town of architectural contrasts between old and new, and it also offers great shopping. It was settled in Roman times, and you can see the remains of Roman thermal baths at the town’s Thermal Baths Museum. Heerlen grew rich on coal mining from the 1890s until the 1960s. Right in the middle of this prosperous period, in 1935, its best-known architectural monument, the Glaspaleis (Glass Palace) (the restaurant where we have social dinner), was built. Originally a department store, it is now the city’s cultural centre and a national monument.
