Cancer is the most common cause of death, but the tide can be reversed by scientific cooperation on an international scale.
Since 2005 TEFAF is therefore supporting research and international collaboration by means of a special Chair of Oncology at the research institute GROW, the School for Oncology and Developmental Biology at the Maastricht University Medical Centre.

Professor Lisa Coussens, cancer biologist at the Department of Cell Development & Cancer Biology, and associate Director of Basic Research in the Knight Cancer Institute, at Oregon Health & Sciences University (OHSU), Portland (US) has been appointed as Visiting Professor for the Chair of Oncology in 2019. Professor Coussens specializes in understanding the role of immune cells and their mediators as critical regulators of cancer development, and identification of immune targets for anti-cancer immunotherapy. She has published many important studies and has received a numbe of prestigious scientific awards recognizing her laboratories contributions to the field of tumor immunology.

The objective of attracting visiting professors is to cement Maastricht’s oncology research with highly recognized national and international research teams, which raises cancer research and finally cancer treatment to a higher level.

Funding is necessary to ensure that researchers can continue their work. The Cancer Research Fund Limburg (Kankeronderzoeksfonds Limburg) collects money for cancer research in the Maastricht University Medical Centre. For more information
