About Amsterdam
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital and most populated city in the Netherlands. The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. It comprises much of the northern part of the Randstad, one of the larger conurbations in Europe, with a population of approximately 7 million.
Amsterdam has a great history. The city was founded in 1275 and was referred to as “amsterdamme” because it was originated as a dam of the Amstel river. During the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, Amsterdam was the most important port in the world.
The Dutch Golden Age came to an end during the 18th and early 19th centuries. In that time the Dutch republic was attacked by both France and England, this took a toll on Amsterdam. However, Amsterdam managed to retain its position as the financial centre of Europe.
Today is Amsterdam is still the commercial capital of the Netherlands. Moreover, it is also known as the cultural capital of the Netherlands, with its historic canals, museums art galleries, theatres, concert halls and parks.
