About the event

Inclusive Research and Innovation (IRI) in STEM:

From Theory to Practice of Research, Teaching, and Impact

When: Tuesday, April 1st, 2025, 14.15h-17.00h

Where: TU Delft, Building 31 (TPM) Lecturing Hall H

Often diversity of human beings matters in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). There are many examples where not considering it leads to bad outcomes – most of the time unintentionally. Think of engineers developing screens not considering that every eighth man is color-weak, i.e. not or insufficiently recognizing and distinguishing red and green. Or imagine all the health diagnostics or health treatments tested on healthy young men, i.e. the most unlikely group needing them.

This workshop is for you if you are interested in diversity and inclusion in their research, teaching, and impact, particularly:

  1. if you are one of the STEM researchers and innovators who want to make a difference for all human beings by considering diversity in terms of gender, sex, age, ability etc.,

  2. if you are one of the STEM researchers and innovators who want to have a viable business case for their results,

  3. if you have a background in diversity and inclusion in research and teaching and would like to join an IRI in STEM project, and

  4. if you want to inspire students and colleagues doing IRI in STEM in teaching and research.

During the workshop we will

  • share our insights on chances and bottlenecks of doing IRI in STEM from our analysis of numerous STEM projects throughout Europe,

  • display cases where STEM colleagues have been successfully doing IRI,

  • discuss how IRI in STEM blends research and teaching, thereby boosting both,

  • show how funding and data handling works for IRI in STEM, and

  • help you with first steps in turning your own research and teaching into IRI in STEM projects in an interactive way.
