Accellerating transitions by value-drive design
9-Dec-2024 09.00 hour
Eenhoorn Meeting Center Amersfoort
The various transition challenges that affect the built environment - such as the transition to a (more) circular economy and the energy transition - require changes in values, such as sustainability, circularity, inclusion, transparency and fairness. Often, different values are encouraged by different mission-driven transitions.
At the local level, tensions can arise between the different transitions and values that are operationalised at this level. How do we gain a better understanding of the values at stake in mission-driven policy? How can value change – crucial for these transitions – occur when we are dealing with all these different transitions at the same time? What role do the understanding of these values play in the motivation of individuals to become agents of change? How do the potential value tensions affect innovation? How can value conflicts be avoided or mitigated? In short: what role do values play at different levels and how can value-driven design help us in transition challenges within the built environment?
During this workshop, we will explore possible collaborations to increase the impact of the proposed research project, and to make optimal use of the knowledge we acquire. TU Delft, the University of Twente, Avans University of Applied Sciences and Utrecht University work closely together on this proposed project. We cordially invite interested partners to participate in this workshop and to join this collaborative project. During the workshop, we will define the project outcomes together. Are you interested in this research and do you want to contribute to increasing the impact? Register at the bottom of this page.
The research proposal
In this research project, we work on knowledge about how tensions between values arise, and how value change takes place, at different societal levels (e.g. policy and implementation level, but also at the persona/individual level), and how these levels are interrelated and influence each other. In doing so, we focus specifically on the transition challenges and on the values that are at stake within the built environment.
We are also working on tools for value-driven design to address tensions between values, facilitate value changes and translate (new) values into working and feasible solutions and technologies, while empowering people to better know and understand their roles in the transitions
This project is looking for impact (partners)!
- Regional Innovation ecosystems that focus on accelerating transitions within the built environment;
- Consultancy companies that support and drive transitions within the built environment;
- Companies that want their products and services to be in line with the values that play an important role in certain transitions within the built environment, which contributes to the scalability of innovative solutions;
- Policymakers who seek to activate the intrinsic motivations of people to produce change, focus on the built environment or work on policies for transitions that affect the built environment.
