Round Table Discussion:
“Do we care? Inevitable bias in the Research”
Location: Lecture Hall B
Time: March 21st 12:45 –14:15
With speaker: Yolanda Hedberg
Yolanda has been an active voice for including societal equity aspects into research design. In this talk, Yolanda will explain how the long history of exclusionary politics has resulted in catastrophically wrong conclusions and medical harm, with some prominent examples. The discussion will focus on how to better consider societal and equity aspects in our research design and implementation of engineering projects. Ultimately, a better understanding of how our research is connected to important societal issues will make the research more impactful and help our researchers communicate their important work to the public. We will touch upon the reasons for existing bias in the research. We together will try to figure out whether it is possible to eliminate bias and/or if it is, actually, an inevitable consequence of science.
Why should I care about inclusivity in my research? Shouldn’t somebody else take this responsibility? How inclusive should it be? Am I losing pure science if I shift my focus?
If these questions resonate with you, join us on March 21st 12:45 – 14:15 to discuss with your peers and our guest speaker! Lunch is included if you register before Tuesday, March 18th. (:
P.S. Also, that week: Warm up for the discussion session with the PhD council drinks at Cafe X on March 19th!
About our speaker: Yolanda Hedberg is a corrosionist/chemist from Western University Ontario (Canada), and EDI principles are interwoven with her research topics. She is currently a visiting professor in the Corrosion Technology and Electrochemical group of Materials Science and Engineering department.
