Designing resilient living environments from a values perspective
Faced with multiple societal transitions, housing and planning systems must respond to pressing short-term challenges that often conflict with long-term sustainability goals. At the heart of these tensions lie diverse and sometimes competing values held by different stakeholders, including current and future residents, market actors, public authorities at various levels, and civil society organisations. Building on a rich body of scientific knowledge about the relationship between values and the production of the built environment, this event brings together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and other societal actors to explore these tensions and identify approaches and concrete solutions to find common ground. The aim is to foster dialogue on how policies and practices can be better aligned to support long-term societal value creation.
Programme
What can you expect?
We will start with a joint introduction with various speakers about the importance of value-conscious design and value-driven policy. After that, there will be pitches and sessions specifically focusing on resilient living environments:
Short pitches by researchers about recent research and insights in the field of digital autonomy. Scientists from TU Delft, Radboud University and Utrecht University, among others, will discuss what we mean by digital autonomy, what policy challenges it entails, how it translates into technical requirements and -choices and how we can assess digital autonomy in software systems.
Short pitches from practice. Initiatives in the Netherlands and Denmark will be presented, as well as challenges that municipalities and universities face in advancing digital autonomy. Attention is also paid to national policy in this area.
A panel with people from science and practice will address questions such as: what do we mean by digital autonomy? How can digital autonomy conflict with other public and ethical values? Where do we want to be in 15 years and what kind of choices does that require now? How can we coordinate collaboration between sectors in the field of digital autonomy?
Roundtable discussions for cross-pollination between science and practice to advance digital autonomy.

The Design for Values Impact Day
On 4 February, the Delft Design for Values Institute (DDfV) organizes the Designing for Values Research & Impact Day with and for policymakers, industry professionals, and researchers.
This event will showcase research at TU Delft to policy makers and other societal stakeholders on values and design, with a special focus on Digital Autonomy. During the series, we will explore how research and practice can collaboratively advance policy and design approaches informed by values. The event will provide the opportunity to learn about the most recent research initiatives and results in your domain, to connect to relevant TU Delft researchers and to meet other policy makers and stakeholders. Recently, the DDfV has established several Special Interest Groups (SIGs), as well as a number of seed projects (for an overview, see here). During the Research & Impact Day, we aim to connect insights from DDfV research to practice, strengthen the ecosystem, and foster meaningful connections between research and policymaking. Participants are cordially invited to attend and will receive a certificate of participation.
Objectives
Strengthening and enabling trans- and interdisciplinary exchange and mutual inspiration.
Identifying further applications in which Design for Values methods and approaches can be of value, while simultaneously contributing to their further development.
Better understanding of the current policy agendas around the theme of Digital Autonomy and defining how the DDfV institute can contribute.
Networking! The event includes lunch and drinks.
