Advanced Testing and Characterization of Asphalt Surfacings on Steel Bridge Decks on June 28, 2016

The worldwide reported distress problems of steel bridge decks indicate the need for further research into their behaviour. The severity of the problem is enhanced by the considerable increase in traffic in terms of the number of trucks and heavier wheel loads. A better understanding of the behaviour and the interaction of the surfacing layers with the steel decks is of paramount importance for the effective design of steel bridges. Currently available innovative methodologies offer opportunities to mitigate material response degradation problems in this type of bridges contributing thus significant extension of their service life. Following the great success of the three earlier Workshops, the 4th workshop on advanced testing and characterization of asphalt surfacings on steel bridge decks will be held on June 28, 2016 under the auspices of InfraQuest and in conjunction with the 4th Chinese-European Workshop (CEW) on “Functional Pavement Design”, in Delft, the Netherlands, on June 29 – July 1, 2016. The workshop aims at presenting the latest developments in the Europe and China for evaluation of the performance of modern surfacing systems on steel deck bridges. Emphasis will be placed on the performance of surfacing layers on prolonging the service life of steel bridges and, on the contribution of experimental and computational techniques on identification and quantification of the prevailing distress mechanisms. Both pave the way for the development of a new generation of functional specifications for the design of surfacings on steel bridge decks.The workshop is free for participants. However, due to the space limitations, workshop registration is necessary.
