Summer School on Affective Neuroscience

Anxiety, depression, and related affective disorders are the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide. Yet, paradoxically, the underlying mechanisms of emotion remain among the least understood phenomena in modern science. Nearly all psychiatric disorders are characterized by—or at the very least accompanied by—disturbances in emotional functioning.

Affective neuroscience seeks to unravel the neural mechanisms that underlie emotional behavior. The field is making an increasingly important contribution to our understanding of the biological foundations of psychological therapies, thereby helping to refine existing treatments and inspire the development of new ones. These advances highlight the urgent need for interdisciplinary and translational approaches to achieve a deeper and more integrated understanding of human emotion.

The Summer School on Affective Neuroscience offers specialized training in this rapidly evolving field. Its overarching goal is to move closer to uncovering the mechanisms that drive human psychopathology. The program provides an in-depth exploration of the latest developments in affective neuroscience, delivered through a dynamic and engaging combination of lectures and interactive workshops.

The Summer School on Affective Neuroscience offers an excellent opportunity for clinicians—including psychologists and medical doctors—as well as early-career researchers to update and expand their knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms underlying affective disorders.

European Certificate in Affective Neuroscience

For each of the courses that was completed successfully the participants will receive a certificate of attendance. Upon completion of both Summer Courses of the Summer School participants will receive the European Certificate in Affective Neuroscience from the Maastricht University.
