Climate change adaptation in the North Sea region conference

Climate change adaptation in the North Sea region conference

These are the sessions you can choose from during the afternoon programme:

Session 1 - Excursion to Hondsbossche and Pettemer sea defence
The Hondsbossche and Pettemer sea defence is an example of Building with Nature measures as well as sustainable asset management. The defence has been reinforced with 35 million m3 of sand. This natural material supports the ecosystem and is cost effective and sustainable as well. Guides from Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier (Regional water authority) and Rijkswaterstaat will show you around the finished project.

What is the learning objective of this session?
The participants will be inspired by a practical example of Building with Nature and sustainable asset management. The project has recently been realized in close collaboration between Rijkswaterstaat (national department of waterways and public works, manager of the coastline) and Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier (regional water control board, manager of the sea defence) as joint Commissioner to the contractor. Tour guides will inform the participants about the design, construction and maintenance aspects of this sea defence.
