TU Delft Library, in partnership with Digirati, has been developing innovative approaches for creating digital exhibitions based on the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF). IIIF is a set of open standards used by libraries, archives and museums worldwide to publish their digital collections and support reuse by others. In the Netherlands, the standards are part of the recommendations of the Digital Heritage Network (NDE).

In this presentation and workshop, you are guided through the freely reusable tools and workflows in order to get you started on making your own IIIF-based digital exhibitions. Following a brief introduction to IIIF and an overview of the ideas behind TU Delft’s digital exhibitions, a hands-on workshop provides you with the opportunity to learn how to access IIIF-resources and become familiar with the open source tools used, including the IIIF Manifest Editor and a standalone IIIF Exhibition Viewer to create and preview digital exhibitions.

While working on the exhibition’s contents you’ll become familiar with the basic concepts of IIIF (such as the IIIF Presentation API and IIIF Image API) but the workshop does not require any coding experience or prior knowledge of IIIF. Different parts and configurations for exhibitions will be discussed, such as the overlay layout, different types of panels and the making of annotations to provide visitors with more information.

Using a recently developed extension within the IIIF Manifest Editor, the structure and layout of exhibitions can be customised, while the results can be previewed and shared using a newly made standalone Exhibition Viewer.

If you have some IIIF resources you want to use in the workshop–either Images or Manifests–these can be the starting point for exploration and experimentation. You can use these to step through the guided activities or you can make use of selected IIIF Collections prepared for the workshop. You can continue working on the exhibition after the workshop, as the tools are openly available online.

The workshop will end with presentations and a collective discussion to reflect on the experiences using the tools and how they can be further developed.
