What can neuroscience add to our understanding of learning?

by Anke Sambeth, Professor of Educational Neuroscience, FPN

How can research make a real difference in education? And how do we translate findings into the classroom? These are pressing questions, particularly in my field: Educational Neuroscience. In this talk, I will introduce you to this relatively young field and what it can mean for learning. Let me start with a story:

Recently, two of our neuropsychology students were discussing their master’s thesis. Both were struggling with the amount of literature they had to read for their theoretical courses. It seemed overwhelming—at least to them! So, they came up with an idea: why not design a thesis project showing that faculty members are asking too much of their students?

They were certain about one thing: their study should involve neuroimaging. Their teacher asked them why. “Well, everyone uses it,” they said. “And we heard that just looking at behavioral outcomes is outdated.” According to the students, knowledge about the brain gives you power. “But how...?,” the teacher asked.

And that brings us to Educational Neuroscience: What can neuroscience add to our understanding of learning? And more generally, how can we make sure that educational research actually benefits students and teachers?
