Introduction to EFR Project: A technical perspective on developing a efuels project
The EFR (E‑Fuels Rotterdam) Project is among the largest initiatives in Europe aimed at producing approximately 250 KTA of e‑SAF by the turn of the decade. E‑fuels, synthesized using renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂, offer a scalable pathway to decarbonize aviation, which is a hard‑to‑abate sector by providing drop‑in compatible solutions within existing infrastructure.
While the underlying technology is critical to enabling such projects, successful project development involves far more than technological innovation alone. Project delivery is inherently complex and multi-layered, requiring alignment among a diverse set of stakeholders with differing objectives. As the saying goes, “it takes a village to raise a child”; similarly, advancing green molecule projects in today’s business environment requires coordinated efforts across the entire value chain.
This presentation provides an overview of how the next generation of green molecule projects can be realized—combining enabling technologies with broader commercial, regulatory, and stakeholder considerations.
