What to Wear
Average temperatures in the Netherlands area in June time range from 18-25ºC (65-77ºF). Casual dress with light layers is recommended for tours. All tours are rain or shine. Please check the forecast before you travel and bring an umbrella and waterproof jacket if rain is in the forecast. The evening events are casual.
At the tours, comfortable flat-soled walking shoes are advised (at some houses even required); those in heels, please bring flat shoes or socks to wear in the houses. Also, please be advised that some sites have uneven, sloping or gravel terrain, and walking is required for short distances. Shoe covers will be provided and required at several sites.
While we strive to make our tours accessible to all, please be advised that tour sites may not be able to accommodate all visitors.
Exterior photography is permitted at all tour sites unless otherwise stated during the tour, provided it does not interfere with the tour schedule and is for private, non-commercial use only. Staff will advise when interior photography is permitted. Failure to abide by these policies may affect future access to private sites and the Iconic Houses Foundation's ability to interact productively with the owners. Thank you for your cooperation.
Conference sessions may be age-appropriate for high school students and above. Iconic Houses tours cannot accommodate children under the age of 16. No pets are allowed at any of the conference sessions, afternoon tours or evening events. No smoking is allowed on tours or at evening events.
Please be aware that each conference session, tour and event will start at its scheduled time. Sessions, buses, tours and events will not be delayed waiting for latecomers. Please respect your fellow conference attendees by arriving on time for bus departures, and by following the instructions of bus staff and tour docents who must maintain a strict schedule.
All house tours depart from Het Nieuwe Instituut (HNI). Vans will transport attendees from HNI to the tour locations on Wednesday the 3rd, Thursday the 4th and Friday the 5th of June and back. No private vehicles are allowed at the house locations; those attending must use the vans. Guests who choose to stay at alternate locations will be responsible for securing their own transportation to HNI. Parking for participants of the conference is possible opposite HNI in Parking Garage, Museumpark 32.
Close to HNI is Witte de Withstraat, brimming with life with its hip bars and eateries. You can expect many great restaurants. Eatery Bazar, specializing in exotic affordable meals, is perhaps the most lively restaurant in Rotterdam including its comfortable terrace. Vietnamese eatery Vivu is for connoisseurs, while you’ll have great Italian food at Oliva. Café De Witte Aap was mentioned as the best bar in the world by Lonely Planet, so take a look inside at least in this tiny but entertaining bar. On the other side of the street you’ll find the trendy Nieuw Rotterdams Cafe, established in a stately building which belonged to the former newspaper NRC. You’ll also find many art galleries and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, an international art center where exhibitions of modern and contemporary art take place. Café De Unie (Mauritsweg 35) is a remake of a building designed by architect J.J.P. Oud from 1925 (exterior only). Dudok Rotterdam is housed in a former bank building from 1945, designed by the famous architect Willem Marinus Dudok. The restaurant is spacious, light and atmospheric, centrally located in the city (Meent 88) and functions as a lively meeting place.
In consideration of my admission to the properties toured through the Iconic Houses Foundation (IHF), I agree to waive, release and hold harmless IHF and the owners, operators, members, students, officers, directors, trustees, agents, successors and assigns, of each and every house and entity included in the conference, including any announced changes, from any and all claims, injuries, causes of action, demands, costs, liability and/or harm of any kind that I may have or may acquire against each of them as a result of my participation in this event. This release shall not be effective if the claim or injury is the result of the sole negligence of the named entity.
