Sustainable Building in Stockholm
In 2018 Arcadis selected Stockholm as the globally leading city when it comes to environmental sustainability. This high score was mostly caused by the combination the city manages to make between economic welfare and environmental leadership. Stockholm scores when it comes to investments in sustainable infrastructure, low CO2 emissions and high air quality. However, like many other European cities, Stockholm faces major sustainability challenges: in 2022, the population of Stockholm will reach one million people. As the City states: “This requires continuous development and innovative and effective urban planning. Currently, there are over 100 active and planned construction projects in and around the city - all with a strong focus on sustainability and the Stockholmers of today and tomorrow.”
This implies that Sweden needs to increase production, shorten lead times and reduce effects on environment and climate. Smart built environment is a prioritized strategic innovation program by the Swedish government. New innovations are tested and there is a need for new ideas to reduce the sector’s environmental impact, shorten planning and construction times, reduce total construction costs and facilitate a new business logic in the sector. Dutch companies have a long tradition of managing complex urban situations and can match their offer with demands abroad.
