Innovation of Things: How disruptive is IoT?

We’ll explore the profound and lasting changes Internet of Things brings to our daily lives, in society, in business and in culture. How do current practices reinvent themselves in an interconnected world and which radically new practices are about to develop? Will there emerge a new ecosystem that replaces existing structures? Which ruptures will result from Smart Industry? Will the future be dominated by a few central platforms or a multitude of decentralized and interoperating systems? How disruptive is the Blockchain and which applications of Artificial Intelligence will have the most influence? This part of the IoT-program doesn’t consist of only lectures and workshops; participants are invited to experience the most cutting edge developments in the labs at RDM. They engage with students, teachers and researchers of Rotterdam University of Applied Science, together with partners from industry and society design innovation, based on IoT.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution and Innovation - Ben van Lier (Centric)

As an individual, organization and society, we undergo a technological revolution. Our postmodern society is increasingly based on people, organizations and objects that are linked together in networks. These networks are more and more becoming socio-technological networks, similar to biological ecosystems. The networks allow us to make new interconnections, exchange and share information between random people, organizations and objects, regardless of time and space. This fourth industrial revolution as the World Economic Forum appoints this development, forms a new challenge for companies and organizations and also a necessity to reinvent their (production) processes. The reinvention of production and production processes asks for new insights about what we now regard as innovation.

Our ever more connected society carried by IoT platforms is on the verge of a transformation. Each change, leads to new perspectives and scenarios that could influence your daily practice. Therefore, it is important to benefit from radical observations & artistic prototypes. These show glimpses of progressive futures and might have transformative potential.

During this lecture you will receive a crash course on radical observations and artistic prototypes in the field of IoT, which will provide input for your scenario planning and innovation funnel.

 

Presentaties Hackathon: Citythings

Dinsdag 10 april werken circa 50 studenten en professionals tijdens een 10-uur durende hackathon aan hun eigen 'Citythings' prototype. We nodigen u van harte uit om bij de presentaties van deze prototypen aanwezig te zijn, welke we feestelijk zullen afsluiten met een borrel en een prijsuitreiking tussen 19.00-20.00 uur.

#1 Get Smart – het ontwikkelen van dynamisch innovatievermogen voor continue vernieuwing en groei - Johan Reijenga (Kenniscentrum Business Innovation)

Bedrijven worden geconfronteerd met ontwikkelingen in de mondiale economie die sneller, complexer en onzekerder zijn dan vroeger en een grote impact hebben. Veel ontwikkelingen worden gedreven door Smart Industry: de verregaande digitalisering en verweving van apparaten, productiemiddelen en organisaties. Smart Industry biedt bedrijven in de maakindustrie kansen om producten, processen en businessmodellen drastisch te vernieuwen en daarmee hun concurrentiepositie te versterken. Middelgrote bedrijven missen echter tijd, capaciteit en kennis om meer radicale innovaties te onderzoeken en in actie om te zetten.

Een groep van zes vooraanstaande bedrijven in (b2b-)maakindustrie in de Metropoolregio Rotterdam Den Haag, wil daarom gebruik maken van de kennis en faciliteiten die bij Hogeschool Rotterdam en Hogeschool InHolland beschikbaar zijn. In dit RAAK-project onderzoeken ondernemers samen met onderzoekers, docenten en studenten hoe zij hun innovatievermogen kunnen verbeteren, om radicale innovatie-ideeën in het kader van Smart Industry te identificeren, te ontwikkelen en te vermarkten.

 

#2 RF Collector: Wireless Powering of Internet of Things Devices using Radio Frequency - Mostafa Hajian (Hogeschool Rotterdam)

Internet of Things (IoT) is tagging miniaturized, low power devices, with machine-readable identification tags. The tags are integrated with sensors to collect information and wireless technology and connect them with the Internet. These devices have a very low energy usage. Powering these devices with battery is very labor intensive, costly and tedious especially as number of nodes increases (which is in many applications is the case). Therefore, the main objective of this research is to introduce a new product called RF Collector, such that IoT devices function independent of battery. Using the suggested approach they will be energized using Radio Frequency (RF) energy harvesting. RF Collector wirelessly capture the RF energy that is wasted in space, re-use it again as the power source for IoT devices and making them autonomous of battery. The ability to harvest RF energy enables wireless charging of low-power devices in real time. This has resulting benefits to sustainability, cost reduction, product design, usability, and reliability. Based on this idea a grant was received from SIA.

 

#3 Why we need IoT-hardware that will survive the next 50 years - Nick Kiran (TWTG)

‘Innovation’ is a massively misunderstood term; used too casually and flippantly. Therefore, TWTG’s mission is to transform technology and fundamentally make the mundane magical. To do this, the focus is on IoT-connected hardware.

In this small lecture, developing connected hardware for industrial and commercial applications, that are designed with a business case, will be discussed. You can expect examples, perspective and the possibility to ask questions.

 

#4 Hands-on IoT Workshop - Niels Stamhuis (Dent / IoT Academy)

Time to get your hands dirty! In Rotterdam they say ‘we don’t talk - we do’ and this workshop is no exception to that. You will get hands-on experience with IoT: using the Marvin-board you will build your own IoT prototype, which works everywhere in the Netherlands using LoRa connectivity. After the workshop you can buy the board & sensors if you want to take it with you.

 

#5 Rondleiding RDM Innovation Dock

Het Innovation Dock van RDM Rotterdam biedt letterlijk en figuurlijk ruimte voor innovaties. In de grote, open loods kunnen technische projecten worden ontworpen, ge-prototyped, geassembleerd en getest. Innovation Dock is het visitekaartje van de innovatiekracht van de Rotterdamse haven, waar ondernemerschap en onderwijs elkaar treffen in een dynamische, maritieme test- en productieomgeving. Interdisciplinaire kruisbestuiving moet gaan zorgen voor verrassende en baanbrekende innovaties. Daarbij is het doel een goede mix en dynamiek te krijgen van MBO, HBO en universitair onderwijs enerzijds, en start-ups, MKB en multinationals anderzijds.

 

#6 Tour through RDM Innovation Dock

The Innovation tour explains how, from its historic origins as a shipyard, RDM Rotterdam has become such a hotbed of innovation. You will visit a variety of innovative companies set up in RDM’s Innovation Dock and get the full story on how they arrived at their wonderful new ideas. Often this is from cross-pollination with RDM’s educational institutions – both secondary vocational education and higher professional education. Together with students, teachers and researchers, companies work on real-life innovation issues in small project teams. During this tour of 1 hour you will also visit their inspirational workspace.
