Internet of Things as Storytelling Technology. How artificial intelligence generates user stories from the interaction between humans and sensors - William Uricchio
We are entering the third era of stories. And to explain how we got here, we must begin with an axiom: story and media form are integrally related. Stable media, such as print and film, yield stable narratives. ‘Unstable’ media – games, immersive environments, transmedia worlds – yield emergent and user-generated story forms, as users connect their own dots in a narrative environment. So what about the stories that emerge in today's IoT? Here, sensor systems track the user's behavior, and AI systems make 'appropriate' choices from a narrative environment, presenting the user with what seems to be their personal story. In fact, these are recursive narratives, mixing selected user data with story elements to construct a unique experience. Whose story is it? Where does narrative agency reside - with the algorithm or human? And how might this challenge our inherited notions of story, agency, ownership, and the cultural function of narrative?

In the Internet of Things something lies between SECURITY and PEACE - Denis 'Jaromil'Rojo
Networking is the age of IoT means connecting many different types of devices owned by a diversity of subjects. Often such devices have full acces to private, common and public information about humans operating them. Furthermore, devices can talk to each other without humans being consulted and such interactions are not even manifest.
In such situations, security risks are often highligthed as conflict scenario's raising the needs for products as "firewalls", "shields", "watchdogs" and all sorts of militarized products to protect mere users.
Can we envision privacy awareness (rather than protection) and present it to participants (rather than users) of a network not as war zone, bus as a place where to be responsible and caring? Can there be harmony among the things that are connecting a person's private, common and public aspects of life? Is it a technical device, a network topology of a cultural change we need to embrace to be ready for the Internet of Things?
