Technology and networks also form the basis for the development of smart cities in this world. Also the worldwide industry cannot escape from these developments. As a consequence of this terms like industrial internet, advanced manufacturing, smart industries and cyber-physical systems become more usual. This new industrial revolution forms a new challenge for companies and organisations and also a necessity to reinvent their (production) processes. Living, housing, working, producing and creating in networks requires a fundamental change in the perspectives with which we live, organise and produce.
Developing Web applications the RESTful way | Dr. Alexandru Archip

The ever-increasing number of Web applications becomes more and more present in every aspect of our lives, day by day. From the now common e-mail and online shopping stores to the more complex Internet of Things and smart technologies, the Web became one of our most useful tools.

The RESTful architectural model for developing Web application is nowadays one the most utilized developing techniques. Its simplicity and elegance allows rapid development of fast, reliable and scalable applications for almost every scenario. The purpose of this lecture is to establish a good understanding of the RESTful architectural style, with a focus on RESTful Web Services.

Medical IoT – integrating medical devices through RESTful interfaces in Internet of Things | Dr. Alexandru Archip

“Internet of Things” (IoT) is the new buzzword of the century. Either hidden within the Web and renamed “Web of Things”, either embedded in new phrases like “Internet of Everything”, IoT aims to integrate every human and every object that are able to communicate.

The medical field makes no exceptions. Patients are able to communicate easier through IoT with their respective physicians. This leads to a better and a more accurate evaluation of their health and to more effective treatments. The main focus of this lecture is to present a RESTful based prototype that allows for physicians and patients to interact. The presentation includes a discussion section on the tests performed using this prototype. Development techniques, based on RESTful Web Services, and sample codes will also be in focus.

Mathematics and cryptography | Dr. Elena Serban
We receive and we send information. Some of these information we may choose to share publicly while we must keep other things private. For instance, we want to share a photo with our friends, but we don’t want strangers to have access to this photo. Also, we don’t want our credit card data to be available to all. This is where cryptography may help us since it is the fundamental of every security protocol. The lecture focuses on the mathematical bases of cryptography, with examples so the students may better understand the theoretical concepts.
Biomedical signal processing | Dr. Elena Serban

Technology is evolving at a faster pace then ever. This of course includes medicine and medical devices. Raging from sophisticated professional devices to common day to day medical gadgets, these instruments are equally used by physicians and patients alike. No matter how complex or simple these devices may be, they both perform the same basic task: acquire data from the real world. The data are either presented as raw values or as processed information.

The lecture presents some applications developed for biomedical signal acquisition and processing.


Speak to me | Yvonne Sedelmaier and Prof. Dr. Dieter Landes
When Pink Floyd wrote their song some 40 years ago, they arguably did not know much about software engineering. Yet, they wanted to point out that a lot of human interaction involves communication such as talking to each other. In any case, communication is prone to lots of impediments and misunderstandings. This also holds true for software engineering, for instance when there is a need to talk to stakeholders in order to tease out some requirements for a software system.

This workshop aims at pointing out some of the pitfalls of (written) communication that the unaware might run into in the context of software engineering. It highlights some of the difficulties in expressing information precisely and transferring it to other persons, in particular under some time constraints. To that end, there will be an assignment to groups of four participants each that is conducted in two phases of some 15 minutes duration in total. The major part of the workshop is devoted to presenting and discussing the teams' results in plenum, and drawing some conclusions as to the role of communication in software engineering.

This exercise should clarify some difficulties related to communication and should illustrate some similarities to requirements elicitation. And participants should also have some fun...

Live hacking- How hackers break into IT Networks | Dr. Erlijn van Genuchten
On a daily basis, we gather information from the press, look for new security holes and known hacker breaches. As it is, though, hacker breaches are not generally shown ‘live’. During this live performance, a large number of real hacker techniques are demonstrated, explained and discussed. In particular, there are attacks taking place on systems on the internet, too. Take a look over the shoulder of a professional and see how security barriers can be circumvented.
The Revolution will be Tweeted: Using Social Media for Global Event Detection | Dr. Abbey Waldron
As the connectivity of the World increases, so too does our ability to detect and monitor events via what people share online.  This lecture will focus on how to detect different types of World events through the lens of social media, with a particular focus on Twitter.  We will learn about important events in the history of social media, and also discuss how various ideas taken from physics, sociology and virology can be applied to the online world.  The lecture will include lots of group work and team challenges.
Gamification of eHealth/mHealth apps | prof. Dr. Helmut Hlavacs
eHealth and more recently mHealth offer the management of health and wellness data, but also try to motivate users to follow health recommendations, increase their fitness, choose a healthy diet, and be compliant to medical treatments. Especially mHealth enables users to access their data and consume motivating information everywhere, and any time. 

In this talk I describe the general trend of mHealth, the need for behavior change techniques, and the trend from compliance to engagement by using gamification. I emphasize that motivation depends on personalities traits, and there is no single technique to "bind them all". Instead, we need open ecosystems allowing third party provides to enter the market and provide new motivating apps tailored for specific needs and user groups, but also being able to cooperate with other apps and rely on a common data base. During the talk I will show numerous examples taken from mHealth, eHealth and gamification.
