MediaEval Workshop 2010

MediaEval Workshop 2010

The MediaEval 2010 workshop brings together the participants of the MediaEval 2010 benchmarking initiative to report on their findings, discuss their approaches and learn from each other. The workshop includes presentations from MediaEval participants and invited talks. It also includes a "Brave New Tasks" session in which new tasks are presented and their potential for becoming MediaEval tasks in 2011 are discussed.

The MediaEval workshop will be held Sunday 24 October 2010 at [Santa Croce in Fossabanda] (http://www.fossabanda.it/) in Pisa Italy, a medieval convent that has been converted into a hotel. The workshop fee is 100 Euros.

Martha Larson (Delft University of Technology) MediaEval 2011

[ACM Multimedia 2010] (http://www.acmmm10.org/) begins on Monday 25 October nearby in Firenze. Note that we will be careful to end the workshop promptly for those who will be taking the train Sunday evening to Firenze. The fast train between Pisa and Firenze takes approximately one hour (slower train takes a bit longer).

The workshop registration covers the workshop only. Participants are asked to make their own hotel reservations by directly contacting the hotel of their choice.

There are some rooms available in the [Santa Croce in Fossabanda] (http://www.fossabanda.it/) hotel. Their Internet site sometimes goes down, but they can be easily contacted by phone at: +39 050 970911. Please mention that you are attending the MediaEval 2010 workshop organized by Martha Larson. They are very kind about speaking English to non-Italian speakers.

We are great fans of Fossabanda, but we would like to remind you that it is a medieval convent and has some characteristics that some people consider to be drawbacks (e.g., Internet access sometimes unstable, drafty, convent bell in the morning, not all rooms have an en suite bathroom, no on-site restaurant). As a result, you may prefer to stay in a different hotel. For example, [Hotel Repubblica Marinara] (http://www.hotelrepubblicamarinara.it/en/) is relatively close by. Otherwise check out Internet sites such as booking.com for additional choices.

Getting to the workshop

Santa Croce in Fossabanda (Piazza Santa Croce 5, 56125 Pisa, Italy), the venue of the MediaEval 2010 workshop, is relatively easy to reach. It is a 20-minute walk from the main train station in Pisa. You can also get a taxi from the train station to the hotel.

The Pisa Airport is located relatively close to the city and a taxi from the airport to the city center should cost you 6-8 Euros, cf. http://wikitravel.org/en/Pisa

Alternatively you can fly to Firenze (i.e., Florence) and take a taxi or bus to the main train station in Firenze and take the train to Pisa from there.

The ACM Multimedia 2010 travel page offers additional information about travel to Firenze.
