Call for Abstracts
September: 30 Final day for submitting an abstract
October 5: Abstract submitters will be informed
On 13 and 14 November 2025 the symposium on Methane Emissions in the North Sea will take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
This symposium aims at bringing together scientific experts from ocean and geosciences, policy makers and stakeholders from industry and to create a shared understanding of the state of the art of knowledge and open challenges.
The symposium addresses topics that are urgent in view of the regulatory requirements that follow from the EU Regulation on methane emissions.
The program will be composed by a Scientific Committee based on an open call for presentations.
Interested persons from research institutions or practice are invited to submit abstracts on one of the following themes:
Origin and migration paths of methane (natural and well leakage)
Measuring and monitoring methane at sea
Ways to mitigate methane leakages
Policy and regulatory framework
If your abstract does not fit precisely into one of these themes, please use the category that is closest.
The abstract should be clear, concise, and written in English with a length between 150 and 600 words. Maximum length of the abstract is 2 pages, allowing for a single figure plus caption to be added. Please be careful when using mathematical symbols and equations, which should be added as embedded images to prevent formatting issues. Abstracts should list all authors with their affiliations. The abstract has to be submitted before September 16, 2025.
Submission of an abstract implies that the person submitting will be presenting at the symposium, or replaced by a co-author to present the study. In case of unforseen circumstances, please withdraw your abstract as early as possible.
The content of the abstracts is the responsibility of their authors. The scientific committee will select abstracts for either oral or poster presentation. The organizers reserve the right to reject abstracts that are not written in English, are outside the scope of the symposium or do not meet basic standards of scientific quality. Abstracts which (only) advocate a specific opinion rather than being part of ongoing scientific debate/discussion will also be rejected.
The language used at the symposium will be English. Simultaneous interpretation will not be provided. Authors are therefore expected to present their research in the English language.
