Kleinlab is a small child care organisation (children aged 0-12) in North-Amsterdam. Suzanne Huis founded Kleinlab when her own children started going to childcare and she deeply believed it was possible to approach childcare differently: from an educational philosophy. Kleinlab is a very warm, stylish green oasis in the industrial area of Amsterdam where children can truly experience creativity, inquiry and where most pedagogues have a background in the creative/artistic sector. The Kleinlab vision was inspired by founding educational thinkers like Malaguzi and Solther and the Kleinlab educational professionals are regularly trained in the practice of its philosophy. The Kleinlab play areas and rooms are very carefully designed to be inviting and to stimulate the children to play, learn and create. Always keeping the viewpoint of the children in mind.
This interactive and creative field visit includes a tour and talk by the founder (the tour will be in Dutch but translation is possible), some creative play and a group discussion around a topic connected to the themes.

The Zuiderlicht College consists of two small establishments: the junior classes and senior classes.Talent development, respect and equal opportunities are central to education at the Zuiderlicht College. Since 2017 the students of de junior classes are working [GS1] in personalised learning. Students can: step up, accelerate, deepen and even take additional courses. From the 2018-2019 school year onwards, the “personalised learning counter” will be put into operation for individual issues. Students will be able to make use of working hours by choice.
The Zuiderlicht College not only teaches in the classroom, but students also discover their talent by participating in dance classes, the master art class, Top-score sport and various other activities in the field of sport, art and culture. During their entire school career students are supported by their mentor and they talk about talent development. This is also in the interest of careful profile selection and preparation for further education. Talent development is not only central among the students, but also among the team. Since 2010 the Zuiderlicht College has been part of the school De Dam. New talented teachers from the school are trained by experienced teachers to create a link between theory and practice.

Spirit! – Resocialisations and coaching, Back on Track (R&B)
Spirit! is one of the organisations within Amsterdam and surrounding municipalities that helps children and their parents when they find themselves in trouble regarding parenting, going to school, staying out of trouble with the law and many other challenges.
One of the programmes that Spirit! provides is a programme for boys (delinquents) aged 13-18 who are being kicked out of school because of behavioral problems, called “Resocialisatie en Begeleiding, Back on Track” (R&B). This is a ten-week programme where the boys take very diverse classes for four days a week from 10.00 till 19.00, and learn how to apply for a job and behave during a job interview, how to behave when angry or feeling aggressive, take cooking classes, but also language courses in Dutch and English. The goal is to explore what motivates them, and learn how to behave even though things are not going their way. The teachers are qualified in teaching the ‘social’ classes or academic courses. From Monday till Thursday the teachers cook dinner with the boys and eat together. During the day the boys are being coached. The goal is for the boys to go back to school after they complete the ten weeks. During the first period of school they stay in contact with the mentors and still visit R&B until dinner. So when they transition from R&B to a new school, they are still being mentored. When both the client and the mentor agree that the client has enough skills to make it on their own, the programme will end.

Detention centre – Zuivere Koffie - ‘A new career path for detainees’
Detention centre JC Zaanstad started a collaboration with coffee brewery ‘Zuivere Koffie’, a reference with a wink to an old Dutch saying, very applicable to the company and its goal: you can say something isn’t quite right by saying it is not ‘zuivere koffie’ (literally translated: pure coffee). The founder of the company is an ex-detainee himself and set on giving people a second chance and career change.
Zuivere Koffie started a branch of their company inside the detention centre. Detainees of JC Zaanstad learn the art of coffee roasting and brewing. They also participate in packing and shipping of the coffee. Eventually they can even learn how to set up their own business or start working in one of the affiliated coffee companies after their release. if they will not start working in the coffee business, they will still have learnt very different skills they can use in different fields of work. Only the most motivated detainees are selected for this programme a and when they succeed, they will have a much better chance of a successful return to society. Other detention centres are interested in collaborating with Zuivere Koffie, which indicates success.
