What is Responsible Research and Innovation?

Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) intends to achieve the 'right' impacts of research and innovation.

To this end, researchers and innovators ‘open up’ research practices to various societal actors, including policy makers, educators, citizens, civil society and business and industry.

In this way powerful and beneficial connections between research and society are established, responsibility is fostered and undesirable impacts are minimized.

The concept has come to play a central role in Horizon 2020, the European funding program for scientific research and innovation.

See RRI tools for more information about the purpose and background of RRI.
