POWER AND DEMOCRACY

MON 22 FEB AND 1, 8, 15 AND 22 MAR – 19:30 TO 21:30

Rene Gabriëls, PhD
Assistant Professor of Philosophy, UM

In the 21st century, humanity is struggling with three major issues: the growing gap between rich and poor, the climate catastrophe and tensions between people with different cultures, lifestyles or religions. The question is whether the problems associated with these issues can be solved in a democratic way. Do the existing power relations frustrate a democratic solution to these problems? Is capitalism compatible with democracy and sustainability? And if that is not the case, what are the alternatives? Degrowth? Nowtopias? By focusing on power and democracy, an answer is given to these questions. This series addresses themes that include: the Anthropocene, big data, commons, digitalisation, cosmopolitanism, digital division, neoliberalism, media power, neo-fascism, patriotism, populism, the public sphere, surveillance, post-democracy, the end of capitalism and resistance.
