Abstract
Modern Clinimetrics: how to measure and construct outcome measures
Health care has undergone a positive development regarding the diagnostic and therapeutic options for various chronic diseases, such as neuromuscular diseases, for which until recently no treatments existed. As a result, there has been an increase in clinical studies where proper and reliable assessments are crucial taking into account the effect of interventions from the individual patient's point of view. Assessing outcome requires proper outcome measures that meet various requirements, anchored in the science called “clinimetrics”. Clinimetrics is seen as part of medical epidemiology, but is increasingly embedded in clinical practice. Clinimetrics focuses primarily on (1) developing and evaluating the usefulness of (existing and new) outcome measures and (2) with the aim of improving the quality of outcome measures and thus also making a clinical phenomenon of interest more measurable (for example, functionality of a patient). This also lays the foundation for improving the care that the patient sees as relevant (value-based health care). The presentation will mainly focus on assessing “what is a good outcome measure”, the requirements for this and how you can look at outcome measures from modern clinimetric point of view, which also captures the wishes of patients, and at the same time can be used for clinical studies.
