Introduction to Design Thinking

Most of us are trained in the classical school of thought—we approach opportunities from the top down. But today’s competitive environment requires us to view opportunity through a different lens; a non-traditional one that focuses on human needs. Ideas that are born from the process of design thinking ensure that outcomes meet three criteria: they are desirable, feasible, and viable—and in doing so, these outcomes create an enduring competitive advantage. Design thinking is a non-linear, iterative process that teams use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems and create innovative solutions to prototype and test.

Design thinking fosters innovation and can be applied in different types of academic domains and various organisations and companies. Companies must innovate to survive and remain relevant in a rapidly changing environment. In design thinking, cross-functional and multidisciplinary teams work together to understand the user needs and create solutions that address those needs. Moreover, the design thinking process helps uncover creative solutions.

During this lecture, you will be introduced to the design thinking process, why it is so relevant in many different areas, how to integrate it within various organizational styles and how to utilize it.

At the end of the lecture, you will be able to:

  • understand the different phases of Design Thinking;
  • trigger your innovation and Design Thinking mindset;
  • use the design thinking methodology in a professional or academic project.
