Foster dialogue on future EU relations
In response to these uncertainties, Studio Europa Maastricht and Maastricht University, in collaboration with the Charlemagne Prize Foundation, will host a public program “The Morning After” on November 6th, bringing together researchers, students, and local residents to watch and analyse the US election results in real time.
This event aims to foster dialogue on the future of EU-US relations, offering a platform for discussing how Europe can navigate its strategic interests while managing a complex relationship with the US. Participants will explore potential scenarios for the next four years and consider how transatlantic cooperation can be sustained in an increasingly multipolar world.
Post-election scenarios
The upcoming US presidential elections will be a critical test for EU-US ties, with potential challenges in key areas such as security, trade, energy, and climate. The EU’s pursuit of strategic autonomy, aimed at reducing reliance on the US, often creates friction, as Washington views these moves as competitive rather than cooperative. If Donald Trump returns to the White House, his "America First" approach could further strain transatlantic relations, raising concerns about US commitment to NATO, financial aid to Ukraine, and alignment with far-right ideologies. Conversely, some experts argue that a win for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris could raise doubts about the US’s ability to support EU priorities, especially given her limited experience in foreign policy and the mounting domestic challenges facing the administration.
