LECTURE

The Good (and Bad) of Boredom

TUE 9 SEPTEMBER, 20:00

Auditorium, Tongersestraat 53

Wijnand van Tilburg, PhD

Experimental Social Psychologist, University of Essex

Boredom is an unpleasant emotion that occurs alongside many adverse phenomena (e.g. depression, aggression, lack of self-control and attention failures). Accordingly, boredom is typically considered a nuisance. Notwithstanding this negative connotation, boredom serves important psychological functions, helping people to steer their pursuit of valued goals and helping to regulate their cognitive resources.

In this lecture, Wijnand van Tilburg will show that boredom is an important part of everyday functioning and actually has several benefits, in the right contexts. So join us tonight and learn why it’s advantageous to put your phone down every now and then.
