The Inclusion Lab: An Interactive Session for Student Associations

Most of us agree that student associations should be welcoming. Often, the challenge isn't the intention; it's the execution. Turning that goal into a reality can be tricky. Maybe the converstaion feels too sensitive, or you're just not sure what 'DEI' actually looks like for a sports team, fraternity or student association. That's where we come in.

The Maastricht University Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity Office is offering free, interactive sessions designed specifically for student associations. We provide the framework and facilitate a supportive discussion, you bring your unique perspective and experiences.

In this session, we will:

  • Identify the attitudes and perspectives towards DEI within your association.
  • Help you define what diversity and inclusion mean in your context.
  • Brainstorm practical ideas for more inclusive events, meetings, communication and more.

For confidential contact persons and board members:

Challenging behaviour: navigating sensitive topics with confidence

In this interactive session confidential advisors of different student or study associations discuss and learn how they can recognize and manage situations in which members display challenging behavior and/or mental health problems.

At the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • detect signals that indicate a personal or psychological problem that might influence students’ study progress, including more alarming signals
  • feel more confident about what you can do (seek connection, offering first help, refer to the right care within or outside of UM)
  • approach a member and engage in a conversation using roadmaps and techniques
  • recognize pitfalls and challenges
  • respect your own boundaries.

Details: The training will only take place if at least 6 participants register.

Responding to sexual violence disclosures training

Reageren op een onthulling van seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag

Board members and confidential contact persons have an important role and responsibility when it comes to receiving disclosures, signals, or reports of sexual violence. How you respond when someone shares their experience can make a significant difference. A negative reaction can cause further harm—often referred to as a 'second rape'—while a positive, supportive response can be an important first step in the healing process.

This training will help you learn how to respond trauma-sensitively to a disclosure, understand the support options available within UM, and know where to refer someone for help outside the university.

Details: The training will only take place if at least 4 participants register. If you are interested but unable to attend, send us a message on sexualsafetyum@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

For members (to be hosted by your student organisation):

Green Dot workshop

Green Dot is an interactive workshop designed to help build a culture where sexual violence is not tolerated—and where everyone plays a role in prevention.

During the session, you will learn how to recognize concerning behaviours and how to intervene effectively as a bystander. The workshop also explores ways to strengthen positive norms within your student organisation and contribute to a safer community.

Our UM trainers will guide you through the workshop—tailored to the student context—using real-life examples to help you build confidence and skills as an empowered, active bystander.

The workshop is part of a broader approach that may include social media, posters, or follow-up reinforcement activities. We’re happy to explore the possibilities together for your student organisation.
