Black hair: Coils & Crowns
Februari is Black History Month, een moment om extra stil te staan bij verhalen die altijd belangrijk zijn, maar vaak onderbelicht blijven. Daarom organiseert INCLUDED op maandag 2 februari Black Hair: Coils & Crowns.
Tijdens dit event staan we stil bij de verhalen achter Black hair. In samenwerking met de Brasa Student Group en kunstenaar Aisha Bah brengen we een programma dat draait om cultuur, trots en verbinding.
We starten door met elkaar in de rijke geschiedenis van Black hair te duiken. Haar is binnen de Zwarte gemeenschap een krachtig symbool van identiteit, cultuur en zelfexpressie. Aisha neemt ons mee langs de verhalen achter de verschillende haarstijlen: van natuurlijke texturen en traditionele stijlen tot de vele moderne variaties die we vandaag dragen.
Daarna gaan we creatief aan de slag. We maken onze eigen crown jewels om locs, braids, twists, afros en andere stijlen te versieren. Ook pimpen we durags en bonnets, zodat je je haar in stijl kunt beschermen. Of je nu vertrouwd bent met deze begrippen, of juist meer wilt leren over Black hair, iedereen is welkom! We sluiten af met muziek, hapjes en spelletjes verzorgd door Brasa.
February is Black History Month — a moment to reflect more closely on stories that have always mattered but often remain underrepresented. On Monday, February 2, INCLUDED invites you to Black Hair: Coils & Crowns.
This event centres the stories and meanings of Black hair. Together with the Brasa Student Group and artist Aisha Bah, we’ve created a programme rooted in culture, pride, and connection.
We begin with a shared exploration of the rich history of Black hair. Within Black communities, hair holds deep meaning as a form of identity, culture, and self-expression. Aisha will guide us through the stories behind different hairstyles — from natural textures and traditional styles to the many contemporary expressions seen today.
Afterwards, we get hands-on and creative. You’ll design your own crown jewels to adorn locs, braids, twists, afros, and more. There’s also space to customise durags and bonnets, combining care and style. Whether you're already familiar with these terms, or want to learn more about Black hair, everyone is welcome! We’ll close the event with music, snacks, and games hosted by Brasa.
