Smoke Free Generation?
Dissecting the Smoking Industry’s Successful Campaign for New Young Addicts
MON 23 MARCH, 20:00

Daphne Raad
Physician and Researcher, Leyden Academy
For years, the number of smokers declined steadily, until the emergence of the vape. Worldwide, young people and children are being successfully enticed to take up vaping on a large scale, often turning to cigarettes later on. Vaping is cool and easy, and you can text and game while smoking. What's not to like? The industry gave this target group its own name: replacement smokers; taking the place of dwindling smoker generations. How is it possible that so many young people have become addicted to vaping in such a short time span? In this lecture, expert Daphne Raad debunks persistent vape myths by analysing the health effects of vapes compared to cigarettes. She dissects the clever marketing strategies used by the smoking lobby to attract young customers. Raad also discusses the role of platforms like Snapchat and the deliberate youth-oriented design of vapes. Finally, she advises on ways to defend ourselves against the smoking industry, how to talk about this in home or school settings, and the role played by effective government policy.
