Marjolijn Goorden - Eneco Abstract: As the Dutch energy system becomes increasingly electrified and reliant on renewable generation, flexibility and energy storage are becoming essential to maintaining a reliable and affordable energy system. From Eneco’s perspective as an energy supplier, this session explores the growing need for flexibility across different timescales, from seconds to multiple hours, and the required power and energy storage capacities. It discusses the complementary roles of storage, demand response and congestion management, including contributions from industrial users, urban demand and grid-side assets. Finally, it considers how imbalance and congestion markets may evolve, and Eneco’s ambitions in shaping this flexible energy system. Biography: Puzzling out a new, green, and reliable energy system is one of the most complex and urgent challenges of our time. I try to contribute be analyzing possible systems of the future and estimate required capacity of wind, solar and storage as well as finding solutions for renewable molecules. Arjan Jongepier - Stedin Abstract: Electricity grid congestion is predictable (and predicted) and can therefore be avoided. The energy transition is a social transition, and the freedom of connection, contract and dispatch are to be governed accordingly. II3050 shows that the deployment of and interaction between all energy carriers is crucial, and that redistribution of benefits costs and risks are key for maximizing social welfare. So, electricity grid congestion management requires decision support and development of techniques and processes that address technical, financial, social and therefore political aspects. Biography: After predicting the Utrecht black out in 1997 10 years ahead, Arjen Jongepier graduated on the application of AI in energy systems in 1996. Long term vision, and societal value and knowledge development and transfer are his key drivers He worked in the liberalization and restructuring of the energy sector, energy trading, asset management and energy system strategy. He is one of the main authors of the first II3050 report, and works at Stedin on energy system strategy, system integration and multi-carrier deployment.
