The Symposium

On Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 June 2027, the Maastricht Centre for Human Rights will organise an international memorial symposium in honour of the late Theo van Boven, entitled:

Human Rights Strategies for the Future in an Age of Contestation:

Revisiting Theo van Boven’s Legacy.

The main idea of the symposium is to gather together senior experts from the UN, legal practice and academia, in order to enter into discussions with young scholars on various symposium panels related to Theo’s main areas of interest in recent years.

A call for abstracts inviting young scholars to explore forward-looking, effective human rights strategies to respond to today’s increasingly contested human rights environment will be launched as soon as possible. We are looking for contributions on four themes: 1) From Exclusion to Inclusion, 2) From Racial to Intersectional discrimination, 3) Reparations & Redress and 4) The Role of the UN in the face of Gross Violations of human Rights.

Location

There is something special about hosting this symposium at our own Faculty of Law in Maastricht. A place so closely connected to Theo van Boven’s academic legacy, it provides a fitting setting to come together, exchange ideas and honour his lasting contribution to law and society.
