Connecting Beyond Opinions

 

An experiential workshop during the TU Delft Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Week

In an academic environment, people are constantly exposed to different ideas, perspectives and convictions. Diversity of thought is one of the
foundations of innovation. At the same time, differences in opinion can also create misunderstanding, tension or polarization, making it harder to truly
collaborate and learn from one another. This interactive workshop invites participants to explore a different way of engaging across differences. Rather than focusing on convincing or debating, participants will learn how to go a layer deeper and meet the human being underneath the opinion. Using the principles of Nonviolent Communication (NVC), participants experience how curiosity, honesty and empathy can shift the conversations
from differences to connection.

Learning objectives

Participants will:
• Learn to explore and connect to their deeper needs underneath opinions that they hold dearly
• learn to distinguish opinions, judgments and strategies from the underlying human needs that drive them;
• practice expressing themselves honestly without blame or criticism;
• develop skills for listening with curiosity to perspectives that differ from their own;
• gain practical communication tools that can immediately be applied in conversations with colleagues, students and collaborators.
Workshop format
The workshop is highly experiential and combines:
• short theoretical introductions;
• live demonstrations;
• individual reflection;
• partner and small group exercises;
• role plays based on realistic situations;
• facilitated discussions.

 

About the trainer
The workshop is facilitated by Daisy Delgado, founder of CoLab Communication, Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC), mediator and Internal Family Systems (IFS) practitioner. Daisy has over seventeen years of experience as a teacher and six years in teaching Nonviolent Communication. She now works internationally with
organisations, teams, couples and individuals. Her workshops combine practical communication skills with experiential learning, creating an
environment in which participants feel safe to explore, practice and learn together
