From Efficiency to Resilience:

The New Economics of Stability

Over the past decades, we have approached economic progress primarily through the lens of efficiency. Globalisation, specialisation and financial integration have delivered significant prosperity gains. At the same time, the financial crisis, COVID, climate change, the energy crisis and geopolitical tensions have shown that efficiency and resilience do not always align. The question for our time, therefore, is no longer just how to optimise systems, but how to design systems that continue to function under pressure. This calls for a reassessment of resilience as an economic value.

Following the lecture, Dirk Bezemer, Professor of Economics of International Financial Development at the University of Groningen, will offer his reflections on Sleijpen’s talk.

This lecture is organised by Studium Generale and the School of Business and Economics (SBE). The Joan Muysken Lecture has been named after SBE’s first professor of macroeconomics (1984-2014), who was the founding father of the department of economics at SBE.
