Johan Swinnen

Johan Swinnen is the Head of the Laboratory of Lipid Metabolism and Cancer and Director of the lipidomics core facility Lipometrix at KU Leuven – University of Leuven. He obtained his PhD from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) in 1992 after a 4-year research stay at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’.

Johan Swinnen has taken up several leadership roles including chair of the Department of Oncology at KU Leuven, vice-chair of the Leuven Cancer Institute and coordinator of the International Doctoral School Cancer Programme. His research focuses on altered lipid metabolism in cancer. In this context, the team has established a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based lipidomics platform enabling bulk, spatial, mediator and tracer lipidomics. This platform has been instrumental in several small- and large-scale collaborations, and has led to seminal findings published in top tier journals.
