An Introduction to Collaborative Conservation Planning

This course is designed to provide a ‘door opener’ into collaborative conservation planning, with a focus on planning for threatened species. The course will raise awareness and provide introductory skills linked to process design and facilitation. It will also ‘signpost’ to deeper training in the subject available both online and in person.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Be able to describe the foundational principles and steps inherent in effective species conservation planning
  • Be able to distinguish between process design, thinking tools and interpersonal skills
  • Be able to explain the group decision-making process
  • Be able to select between different planning processes that are relevant to the management of species ex situ, and at the interface with wild populations
  • Be able to do more effective listening
  • Be able to apply at least one thinking tool to help groups solve problems, make decisions or develop plans

Content

The course is designed around the IUCN SSC CPSG Principles and Steps. We begin by exploring participants’ experiences of group decision making to understand what is required to improve the process. After a review of the group decision making process, we introduce particular thinking tools that can help groups make better decisions and solve problems, providing an
opportunity for some of these tools to be practiced. Following an introduction to particular interpersonal skills, we provide an overview of the range of CPSG planning tools that can be used to inform conservation planning for collections through the One Plan approach.

Assessment

Formative assessment will be undertaken during the course as participants practice particular facilitation tools.

How to apply

Registration is on a first come first served basis and will be limited to 30 participants. Contact Laura Myers (laura.myers@eaza.net) if you have any questions about the course or registration process.
