Speakers
Speaker 1:
Dr. Jelena Trajkovic - Assistant Professor
Brain Stimulation and Cognition section, Department of Cognitive Neuroscience , FPN, UM.
Jelena Trajkovic is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University. Her research focuses on combining transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) with electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying higher cognitive functions such as attention, visual perception, and awareness. She is particularly interested in determining the causal role of brain oscillations in these functions by applying protocols that can directly modulate oscillatory activity. In addition, she works on developing innovative TMS approaches, including state-dependent stimulation tailored to individual participants, as well as network-based protocols aimed at influencing entire cognitive networks rather than isolated brain regions.
Speaker 2:
Dr. Sarah Hescham - Assistant Professor
Department of Neurosurgery, Institute for Mental Health and Neuroscience, Maastricht University.
Dr. Sarah Hescham’s research focuses on understanding how deep brain stimulation (DBS) can modulate cognitive function in experimental models of dementia. Using behavioural, electrophysiological, and molecular approaches, she investigate the effects of stimulating different neural targets and explore the underlying mechanisms through which DBS influences memory-related circuits. This work aims to identify optimal targets and stimulation strategies to improve cognitive outcomes and inform the development of more effective neuromodulation-based therapies.
Speaker 3:
Prof. Dr. David Roef – Professor
Criminal Law and Neuroscience in Department Criminal Law and Criminology, Maastricht University.
David Roef works as a Professor of Criminal Law, with a specific chair on criminal Law and neurosciences, at the Faculty of Law at the University of Maastricht. He has been frequently involved in legal education and research related to comparative criminal law and neurolaw (e.g. on criminal law, neuroscience and addiction). He is also the co-founder of the first Dutch interfaculty minor in human and legal decision making. Most recently a co-authored the handbook Comparative Concepts of Criminal Law.
