Live and Online lecture:
Consciousness and the brain

Monday 17 January, 20:00
Auditorium, Minderbroedersberg 4-6

Prof. Cyriel M.A. Pennartz
Professor in Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience, University of Amsterdam

When you wake up in the morning from a deep sleep, you instantly know that you – and your body – are back in the world. This is consciousness. But what is the relationship between consciousness and our brain? Are they one and the same? Who are we really?

This lecture will take you on a quest to understand one of the greatest scientific challenges of the 21st century: the connection between brain and mind. Pennartz will argue how the brain may create our impressions of reality, and why it has come to do so, reasoning from the evolution of life on earth. Age-old questions about dreams, colour perception, phantom sensations and, hallucinations will be approached from recent brain research, arguing for a renewed theoretical framework for understanding brain-consciousness relationships.
