Information about Hackathon Immersive Tech 2025 

1 - 3 December 2025 

Are you a student with a passion for technology and innovation? Are you studying to become a software or hardware developer, 3D artist, or storyteller? Or are you a student in healthcare, marketing & business, or another field of expertise with an interest in Immersive Technology? Then hackathon Immersive Tech might be a great opportunity for you!

During this unique event you will explore the possibilities of immersive technology. Within 3 days you will work in a team to come up with an immersive and innovative solution for one of the challenges. Think about healthcare solutions, immersive stories or virtual cities. No technical skills are required!

Within the hackathon you can take one or more roles. Think about 3D artist, sound designer, storyteller, tester, healthcare professional etc. More information about these roles can be found on this page.

 

What is Immersive Tech?

Immersive Technology creates an experiences that appeal to as many senses as possible. Think about Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), but also projections, or an interactive installation can be immersive. These technologies are widely applied to training in business or healthcare, for simulations in construction, for games and much more. During the hackathon, you will explore the possibilities of Immersive Tech and develop a prototype with it!

 

What are the challenges?

- Creating the Citiverse
Creating an inclusive digital stage where Rotterdam’s youth can connect,
express themselves creatively, and showcase their talents.
Challenge by Gemeente Rotterdam, Digital Child Rights and Stichting Levels

- The Immersive Visboeck Challenge
Prototyping an XR experience of the 16th-century Visboeck by Adriaen Coenen, where the user can engage with one or more illustrations or Coenen himself.
Challenge by SURF, National Library & Centre for Mathemetics & Computer Science

- XR for Heroes: Supporting first responders on land and at sea
Designing an immersive solution that strengthens safety, situational awareness and resilience of first responders in offshore and maritime emergencies
Challenge by Veiligheidsregio Rotterdam-Rijnmond

In addition to learning about Immersive Technology in an exciting setting and
connecting with professionals in the field, this hackathon offers you much more. We developed an Edubadge especially for this hackathon, as proof of participation.  An Edubadge is a digital certificate that represents certain knowledge and skills. More information on how to claim this Edubadge will be shared during the hackathon. Last but not least, there are three prize categories, sponsored by SURF:

- Best use of Immersive Technology - The prototype makes compelling
use of XR software and/or equipment and creates true immersion

- Best solution to the challenge - The concept is an innovative approach
to the challenge and provides a suitable answer to the question

- Most (social) impact to the challenge - The project has the potential to
make a social impact, which different target groups could benefit from.
