Decarbonization Potential of Industrial Process Heat by Electrification


Decarbonization of industry is an important part of the green transition of society. Fossil fuel is the traditional means for providing process heating in the production, which is the source of two thirds of carbon emissions in Danish industry. The potential for electrification of the heating processes will be addressed – in particular focusing on the relation to energy efficiency potentials using direct electrification by means of heat pumps. Heat pumps may cover heat and steam demands in a large range of industrial facilities, while some demands will need direct electric heating or indirect electrification. The efficiency potential and feasibility of appropriate energy integration of heat pumps and state-of-the-art in the field will be discussed as well integration with alternative electrification technologies. Some examples of current R&D projects in the field are presented, including demands for further development and challenges for the implementation. Recent results related to software tools for analysis of heat pump solutions and energy mapping in industry will be presented together with methods for optimum heat pump integration in process systems.

The talk will focus on the potential for direct electrification in industrial process heating by means of heat pumps. The resulting potential for decarbonization and examples of integration for energy efficiency will be presented together with novel tools and methods for assisting industry in decision making for supporting the green transition and reaching climate targets.
