Bio
Kathryn Abel FMEdSci is Professor of Psychological Medicine and Reproductive Psychiatry, Director of the Centre for Women’s Mental Health at the University of Manchester and of GM.Digital at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Trust where she is also an honorary consultant psychiatrist.
Her interests include sex differences in mental health; maternal condition and its effects on fetal development and offspring outcomes; parenting as a mediator of maternal effects and the outcomes of children of parents with mental illness. GM.Digital (https://camhs.digital/) has a focus on improving access to, and engagement in mental health service development and research and in young people. She has over 200 publications and has edited several books on women and mental health including Comprehensive Women’s Mental Health (2016 Cambridge University Press) and the ‘Female Mind’ (2017) for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, European Research Council Fellow, a National Institutes of Health Research Senior Investigator and was the National Lead for Mental Health for the UK NIHR from 2015-2024. She now co-Chairs the UK Government and Office for Life Sciences Mental Health Goals Programme.
