Physical Metallurgy in Circular Steels
June 1 and 2, 2026
(Monday and Tuesday)
Aula Conference Centre, Commissiekamer 3, Delft University of Technology
This academic workshop is specifically designed for scholars and research students interested in advancing knowledge in sustainable materials and metallurgy of steel. Recycling steel scrap has become increasingly important as scrap generation continues to rise, because this secondary production route requires much less energy than the primary steelmaking route from iron ores. The diversification and contamination of scrap streams by mixed alloys, coatings, and electronic waste residuals leads to the uncontrolled presence of impurity elements in steels produced from scrap. Impurity elements commonly present in scrap, such as Cu, Sn, As, Cr, Ni, Mo, influence steel processing, phase transformations, and resulting microstructures and properties. Therefore, it is essential to broaden the limited fundamental understanding on phase transformations and properties.
The Physical Metallurgy in Circular Steels workshop will highlight recent advances in fundamental research, experimental methods, and computational studies on impurities effects on phase transformations. This basic understanding is urgently needed to improve microstructure control and enable the production of high-performance circular steels. Participants are invited to engage in focused scientific discussion.
Best regards,
The organization committee
