About the event
We are happy to announce the second Resilient Delta Expert Meeting: Finance Solutions for a Resilient Delta - From Risk Management to Transformative Adaptation, which will take place on Thursday, May 22, from 09:00 to 18:00 in Delft.
Accelerating rates of climate change pose new challenges for maintaining the livability of the Dutch delta and for the stability of our economic and financial system. In response to these escalating risks, financial institutions are shifting how and where they invest and offer financial products. Capital is retreating from risk, and the consequences for society are profound. One need only look to the growing impacts of property insurers' retreat in high-risk places like California and Florida as an example.
Prudent financial risk management isn’t enough, however. Financial institutions increasingly recognise the need to address these underlying risks fundamentally through adaptation projects. Initiatives like the National Adaptation Strategy and NL AAA-Klimaatbestendig focus on this joint ambition in the Netherlands.
Scientists are ready to unravel the complexity and propose transformative action perspectives. Resilient Delta brings these scientists together in public-private collaborations and research projects. Join us in working towards transformative, long-term adaptation and finance pathways for a prosperous and safe delta to further this work. To find this joint pathway, we must connect adaptation and finance, public and private, local and international, the short-term and long-term.
We will start the day with a dialogue between two high-level leaders who build these bridges in Europe and the Netherlands: Frank Elderson (Vice Chair of the Supervisory Board of the European Central Bank) and Co Verdaas (Delta Commissioner and Professor at TU Delft). On one hand, climate risks threaten financial and economic stability; a dilemma that real-world adaptation can address. On the other hand, adaptation will require well-coordinated public and private finance, but this requires careful alignment and shared value cases. Together, Frank and Co will reflect on ways to bridge the worlds of finance and adaptation, considering questions such as:
How can we address biodiversity goals when making strategic decisions about managing water and soil in our delta?
How can we couple adaptation investment and disaster finance to secure economic resilience in the face of climate shocks?
How can the public and private sector find common purpose and joint strategies to advance transitions?
You will also hear from internationally leading academics illuminating how our spatial economy shapes possibilities for transformative adaptation in the delta. Adaptation choices shape economic and financial risks and opportunities. Inaction is no longer an option; actions must be carefully considered. Our scientists will offer crucial perspectives on these dynamics and what we can do to move forward jointly.
The afternoon program is all about connecting ideas with action. We offer five parallel working sessions, during which you will work on real-world cases with top representatives from the financial sector, adaptation community, and science.
Together, let’s continue to bridge the worlds of adaptation and finance. Let’s take a smart leap from near-term financial risk management to long-term transformative adaptation. Register your attendance to be part of this Expert Meeting; seats are limited!
We look forward to seeing you in Delft on May 22.
