Discuss the future of the EU with a European Commissioner

Wopke Hoekstra, the European Commissioner for Climate Action, will visit Maastricht University on Tuesday 21 May.

Wopke Hoekstra (born 1975) has been European Commissioner since October 9, 2023, in the Von der Leyen Commission. Prior to this, Hoekstra was the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Rutte IV cabinet and Minister of Finance in the Rutte III cabinet. From 2011 to 2017, he was a member of the Dutch Senate.

Hoekstra will share his vision on the future of the European Union, with a focus on geopolitics, climate and innovation. Following his talk, Commissioner Hoekstra will answer questions from the audience, encouraging their participation in the upcoming European Parliament elections. This event is primarily aimed at students and staff of Maastricht University and Zuyd Hogeschool, but we also welcome the participation of external guests.

The event is organised by Studio Europa Maastricht in collaboration with CERiM, the SUM2030 sustainability program, and Maastricht University’s Faculties of Law and Arts and Social Sciences. The event is organised as part of the Jean Monnet Module on “EU Democracy: Engaging Young Citizens”, which is co-funded by the European Union.
