Abstract
Biosensing and Biocueing for Mental Health(care)
In this presentation I will give a short introduction on the potential of ambulatory physiological monitoring in the context of mental healthcare. With monitoring an emphasis is placed on physiological processes that are continuously recorded unobtrusively in daily life with a view to aid (self-regulatory) processes that are important for sustaining mental health. A number of such monitoring studies on addiction and aggression regulation will be discussed. These studies suggest that there might be possibilities for adding general, non-specific biocueing to mental health treatment. Biocueing can be defined as cueing users when physiological values are in a specific ‘at risk’-range, and allowing just-in-time behavioral support. However, how this biocueing technology should be designed for supporting mental health is an unresolved issue. A critical analysis of currently available (consumer) technology will be offered, and an alternative value-sensitive approach for integrating biocueing in mental healthcare introduced. To conclude, a number of currently running biocueing studies will be highlighted.
