Why Thor Central?
For RMMR, we chose a venue whose story reflects what the conference is about.
Thor Central is the former Art Deco headquarters of the Waterschei coal mine in Genk. For decades, the mine was a driving force in the region, bringing together thousands of workers and their families, many from across Europe and beyond, around a shared purpose. When the mine closed in 1987, the building was protected as industrial heritage. Rather than being left behind, it was carefully restored, preserving original features such as its terrazzo floors and Art Deco details, and reopened in 2017 as the centrepiece of Thor Park, a campus dedicated to technology, energy and innovation.
In many ways, Thor Central tells a story of regeneration: a place that had lost its original function was not replaced, but restored and given a new purpose. That is also the ambition of regenerative medicine. Muscle stem cell research aims to repair and restore tissue damaged by disease or injury, building on what is already there to give it new life.
Just as Thor Central brings together industrial heritage, modern innovation and natural elements, RMMR aims to bridge laboratory research, clinical application and industry to create real-world impact for patients. Both reflect the power of bringing different elements together and translating existing potential into something new.
We could not think of a more fitting place to discuss the future of muscle regeneration.
