Bio
Prof dr Vermetten (1961) was trained in psychiatry in Maastricht and went on training in neuroscience at Yale University, Stanford and Emory. He completed a PhD on Neurobiology of PTSD at Utrecht University in 2003. He started working for Ministry of Defense and completed his military training in 2007 when he became Head of Research at Military Mental Health (COL). He steered several studies on the neurobiology of PTSD of which PRISMO is one that delivered 5 PhDs, and has collaborated in NATO. He received a professorship in 2013 at Leiden University because of the Ministry of Defense and ARQ National Psychotrauma Center, that after his retirement in 2021 from the military was sustained by Leiden University. He is working at Department Psychiatry at Leiden University, as consultant Mental Health for the United Nations and works for Veterans Institute in Doorn on a project aimed at bringing Dutchbat veterans back to Srebrenica. He is PI of studies looking at novel interventions such as 3MDR, MDMA and psilocybin in treatment of PTSD. He is fellow of several organisations, has authored several books and travelled the globe.
