The Maastricht Treaty: From Negotiation Table to Historical Archive
This visit offers a unique introduction to the history and legacy of the Maastricht Treaty, the agreement signed in 1992 that established the European Union and paved the way for the introduction of the euro. The visit takes place at Centre Céramique, home to both the Maastricht Museum and the Europa Archief Mathieu Segers. We begin with a visit to the museum's exhibition on the Maastricht Treaty, where participants will learn about the historic summit that brought European leaders to Maastricht and explore the political ambitions that shaped the future of Europe. A highlight of the visit is the original table on which the treaty was signed.
The programme then continues at the Europa Archief Mathieu Segers, which preserves unique archival collections relating to the history of European integration and the Maastricht Treaty. Through original documents, correspondence and personal archives of key European actors, participants gain insight into the negotiations, ideas and individuals behind one of the most consequential moments in modern European history. Combining museum objects with authentic historical sources, this visit offers the opportunity to explore the making of Europe in the city where its founding treaty was signed.
