Paul Vulto is CEO and co-founder of MIMETAS,
a global leader in Organ-on-a-Chip technology. The company develops human tissue and disease models that are used to test and develop novel drugs. MIMETAS works with the majority of large global pharmaceutical companies, deploying her platform to develop drugs for diseases such as cancer, inflammatory diseases, and fibrosis. Prior to founding MIMETAS, Paul held positions at a.o. Leiden University, Freiburg University, and Silicon Biosystems. Since 2023 Paul is admitted as a fellow to the Netherlands Academy of Engineering.

Human disease often manifests itself at the interplay between cell types. Yet in vitro assays are still predominantly based on simple mono cultures of cells. MIMETAS specializes in assays based on comprehensive culture models that are miniaturized, 3D and perfused. I will describe how we build human lung, liver, gut, CNS, kidney and tumor models. These models comprise critical elements of the microenvironment, such as perfused vasculature, stroma, immune cells and epithelia. The combination of cell types leads to micro homeostasis, which makes them stable, robust, reproducible and even screenable at high numbers. Machine learning algorithms are used to extract multi parametric responses from the incredibly rich datasets that are generated from such comprehensive assays. I will shows examples for triaging CarTs in solid tumors, induction of IBD phenotypes, and antifibrosis screens in the liver.
